Hong Kong BBQ – Chinatown
Not much posting recently – buried with work. Heading to Las Vegas (Mandalay Bay) for a client and I’m toying with the idea of checking out Charlie Palmer’s Aureole. Need to figure out if I can expense it though…
But I did take moment to stop by Hong Kong BBQ at the Chinatown Food Court for siu mei (roasted meat) the other night: open pressed duck and cha siu.
open pressed duck…
Understand that this is Chinese pressed duck, not the French canard au sang. The preparation at Hong Kong BBQ is a bit different, as they don’t de-bone the duck, but otherwise, it’s pretty standard – the duck is steamed, split open, pressed flat and steamed again, then deep fried. The result is juicy flesh with a crispy brown skin. One thing I like about siu mei is the typical choices for sides: more siu mei.
Easy choice: cha siu (Chinese barbecued pork).
cha siu…
This is probably one of the better siu mei stands I’ve found in Atlanta – neck and neck with Ming’s BBQ in Asian Square and a little ahead of the one inside the Atlanta Farmer’s Market.
